It depends on who controls the r-address. Exchanges usually pool customer XRP under a single r-address and use the destination tag to credit your account, so leaving it out can make the deposit go missing. A personal self-custody wallet such as Xaman or a hardware wallet normally needs no tag.
Ripple is the listing name, taken from the company most associated with the coin, but the asset you receive is XRP on the XRP Ledger.
