On Polygon PoS, effectively it is. In September 2024 Polygon upgraded MATIC to POL one-for-one, and POL became the chain's gas and staking coin. This exchange still lists the Polygon-native coin as MATIC, so your wallet may show the received balance as POL.
That works: Polygon PoS uses the same 0x address format, and the same private key controls that address on both chains. Switch your wallet to Polygon to see the coins. Do not use an exchange deposit address unless that exchange confirms it accepts native Polygon PoS deposits.
No starting balance is required. The Polygon network fee for the payout comes out of your swap amount. Once the coins arrive, they also cover gas for your next transactions on Polygon, which is one reason people make this swap.
It is the Polygon token on Ethereum, which sits on a different chain from the native coin on Polygon PoS. Choosing it sends an ERC-20 token to an Ethereum address, and moving it later costs ETH in gas. For using Polygon apps, the default Polygon PoS network is the usual pick.
