The usual reason is moving XLM into a dollar-pegged asset after a price run, then using that USDC in Ethereum apps or sending it to a platform that only accepts the Ethereum version of the token.
USDC is a stablecoin issued by Circle and backed by cash and short-term US government securities, which keeps it close to one US dollar. The default payout uses contract 0xA0b86991c6218b36c1d19D4a2e9Eb0cE3606eB48 on Ethereum. Solana, Base, Arbitrum One, Polygon and other networks can be chosen in the selector. USDC also exists on Stellar, but it is not a payout option here, so this XLM to USDC exchange is always a cross-chain swap. Receiving the ERC-20 token needs no ETH; moving it later does.
Ethereum adds a block every 12 seconds and Stellar ledgers close in a few seconds, so timing comes mostly from deposit detection and order processing. That option does not exist on this pair. The payout options are the ERC-20 version on Ethereum by default plus networks such as Solana, Base, Arbitrum One, Polygon, Avalanche C-Chain and BNB Smart Chain. Stellar-issued USDC is not among them, so never enter a Stellar G address for the payout.
Receiving costs you nothing in ETH, because the payout gas is paid from the swap and already reflected in the estimate. You will need ETH later to send or use the USDC on Ethereum. To avoid that, pick a network with lower transfer costs, such as Base or Solana, before you create the order.
Circle issues USDC and redeems it for US dollars for verified customers. Reserves are held in cash and short-term US Treasury securities, and Circle publishes regular attestations. The peg can wobble slightly during market stress, so treat a stablecoin as low-volatility rather than risk-free.
The estimate subtracts the Ethereum network fee for sending the payout, and that fee is roughly the same whatever the order size. On a small amount it takes a bigger share. The minimum shown in the widget reflects this and moves with gas prices.
When the order page shows a memo with the deposit address, it is required. Stellar deposit addresses are often shared, and the memo is how deposits are told apart. Enter it in your wallet's memo field with the same type and value, then double-check before you confirm.
Two things protect you: xswap.to never asks for your keys or seed phrase, and it holds no balances, since the deposit goes to a one-time address and the payout to the address you enter. A wrong address or missing memo cannot be fixed afterwards, since transfers are irreversible.
